O God, not again! Another school shooting. Lord, there are so many young people who need You... who need mental health intervention.
Yes, again our hearts are broken with the tragic news. How will our society help parents and teachers and law enforcement stay on top of those who suffer with the mental illness that becomes violent? One answer is for churches to embrace families where there is a history of mental illness. Have your church host groups like NAMI--National Alliance on Mental Illness; or, sponsor a speaker at your church or at the school.
I have found that individuals with mild or serve mental illness get great stability from a combination of three things. One good counseling, two the right medications, three an active family life within the church. When I spoke in Washington D.C. about faith and mental illness. Ninety percent of families who went to church or tried to get help from a church; were shunned away! Their stories on how they were treated were truly shameful.
We must remember too, that so often families have tried to get help for their loved ones, but run into so many obstacles that those who need the help fall through the cracks, and the families just cannot do anything more. Let us help others get the help they need. Start with prayer, then go and serve them. Blessings.
